Bridge in Langa de Duero Langa de Duero

The spectacular medieval bridge at Langa de Duero, with 12 arches and nearly 160 metres long, is an excellent viewpoint over the River Douro (Duero in Spanish) and its leafy banks. By the side of the river, delimiting the fields and protecting them from the habitual floods, a winding strip of vegetation, in the form of riverine woodland, is dominated by poplars, ash trees and willows.

An intricate network of irrigation channels distributes the water from the River Douro across a wide green valley, creating a mosaic of irrigated fields. In places, the crops alternate with plantations of black poplars aligned geometrically that at first sight may be confused with natural woodland, but which are only temporary lodgings for the varied wildlife living in the area.

  • Access by car: accessibility as far as the bridge in Langa de Duero, where there is a car park next to the swimming pools.
  • Accessibility for people with limited mobility: there are no infrastructures adapted for people with limited mobility. The bridge has a firm tarmac surface and the traffic is controlled by traffic lights, but there is no pedestrian lane.
  • Legal protection: part of the Site of Community Importance ES4170083 (Banks of Douro and tributaries).
  • Seasonality: any time of the year (autumn colours are outstanding), except at times of flooding when the river may overflow its course.
  • Recommendations, what to see and do: we recommend visitors park their vehicle near the bridge and walk to the woodland on the riverbank.
