Lonja de los Mercaderes is an exceptional example of a 15th century-building in Gothic style with an impressive façade, which is why it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The building is the living image of the economical power of the city of Valencia in the late Middle Ages, just before the discovery of America made the ports along the Atlantic coast more important than the ones in the Mediterranean.
The Lonja is considered the most important civil Gothic monument in Europe. It was constructed following the architectural style of the period (rectangular building and columns), though it has some distinguishing features. It has a stone façade, sculptures and 28 gargoyles (topics are related to erotic and satirical issues), flamboyant windows, ogee windows and the shields of the Sala de Contratación.
The Sala de Contratación, which has a rectangular floor plan and a high ceiling, is singularly impressive. It is supported by eight exquisite spiral columns, designed to resemble palms. This spacious room is covered with a ribbed vault.
Visits: Entry tickets. Information about opening hours and ticket prices is available at Lonja de los Mercaderes.
