The silhouette of its old castle is the first thing travellers see as they approach San Esteban de Gormaz, although a few walls are all that remain of it. Designated a historical site in 1995, the town possesses important Romanesque heritage, seen in the churches of St Michael and Santa Maria del Rivero.
A stroll around San Esteban inevitably leads to the River Douro and its medieval bridge with 16 arches.
