Gorges of the River Tajuña, Anguita
Route from Anguita to Luzón through the River Tajuña Gorges Anguita
The Tajuña Gorges are exceptionally beautiful, and of great ecological value, in nearly 11 kilometres of the river as it winds between the villages of Anguita and Luzón, very near its rising in Maranchón. Half way along this length, the river has carved some astonishing curves, forming caves and unique shapes eroded in the rock. The course of the river, with hardly any gradient, slowly flows between the limestone moor of Maranchón (to the north of the river) and the older siliceous rocks (to the south), consisting of conglomerate and reddish sandstone.
The different geology is also seen in the building materials in the two towns, where the red sandstone and limestone are both important. In the middle of its course, where the river has formed the gorges, the valley bottom is occupied by dense riverine vegetation, with shrubs and black poplar, and fields are only found where the valley is wider, near the towns.
- Access by car: there is no tarmac road but the route from Anguita to Luzón through the River Tajuña Gorges follows an earth track suitable for all kinds of vehicles (it may become muddy in wet weather), over a distance of 11km.
- Access for people with limited mobility: there are no infrastructures for people with limited mobility.
- Legal protection: it forms part of the Special Protection Area ES0000094 and the Site of Community Importance ES4240017 (Moors of Maranchón, Mesa and Aragoncillo Gorge). Seasonality: we recommend visits in spring and autumn. Recommendations, what to see and do: it is worth visiting the villages of Anguita and Luzón, which have been preserved unchanged by the passing of time as part of their identity.
