Ayub Castle: gypsum landscapes. Calatayud

Paisaje. Calatayud, Zaragoza / Santiago Cabello.
Ubicación:

In the upper part of the town Calatayud

The castle is at 652 metres above sea level, on a promontory of gypsum where the tough pines survive as they try to emulate the gypsum-loving vegetation that dominates in the area. The 360° panorama over the surroundings is exceptional: the north, the Ribota valley and Sierra de la Virgen, with the silhouette of Moncayo in the background. To the east, the Sierra de Armantes and its incredible hills as if taken from one of John Ford’s Westerns. To the south, the Jalón valley, whose gardens are happy to receive the water from the River Jiloca, and the gypsum landscape of the Jiloca hills. Finally in the west, the Sierra de Vicor protects the route to the Ebro valley.

  • Access by car: the Great Castle of Ayub is in the upper part of the town. To go by car, you should take Rúa de Dato Street and continue along Soria Street to a junction signposted on the right, just as you leave the village, and go up a tarmac road to the castle. There is a car park next to it.
  • Access for people with limited mobility: there are no infrastructures for people with limited mobility.
  • Legal protection: the castle is listed as a Property of Cultural Interest.
  • Seasonality: any time of the year. Recommendations, what to see and do: a tourist visit to the city of Calatayud.
