The Mystery of Elche

El Misteri de Elche, drama religioso de origen medieval declarado Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad por UNESCO / Turisme Elx.
Ubicación:

Elche’s Basilica of Santa María Elx / Elche

Misteri d’Elx is a lyric drama dating from the Middle Ages that represents the death, the passage into heaven (assumption) and the crowning (coronation) of the Virgin Mary. The Misteri has been represented almost without interruption since the Middle Ages. It was even exempted from the decree of the Council of Trent, which proscribed representations inside churches, thanks in part to Pope Urban VIII.

The mystery is performed on the 14th and 15th August. It is a key work of European religious theatre because of its uniqueness. Following the tradition of religious medieval theatre, no women appear on stage; performers are exclusively male. The mystery play of Elche was inscribed in 2001 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and has also been declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest. Hours: 14th (La Vespra) and 15th (La Festa) of August. In even-numbered years, there is a single-day performance on 1st November.

Tickets: In addition to allowing entry to the performance of the drama, tickets include entry to watch general rehearsals. Details concerning prices and show hours may be checked at Patronato del Misteri d'Elx.
