The poet says that El Cid and his men rode down the river Jalón after leaving Castejón de Henares, continuing past the Anguita caves on their fifth day of their journey. The caves are visible on both sides of the road that leads to the church. The most common probability is that the caves are situated next to Torre de la Cigüeña, whose origins date back to the Muslim period. The caves are at present inaccessible due to flooding, soil and vegetation. Yet, at the time when El Cantar was written (12th and 13th centuries) the caves were very likely used as a shelter for men and livestock. They might as well have been used by the group of followers of El Cid.
