The town of Atienza was designated a historical centre in 1962. It is a surprising town because of the wealth of its heritage, much of which can be viewed in its three museums and its streets, which still evoke much of its medieval and Renaissance past.
Under the shadow of its ever-dominant castle, time seems to have stopped in its steep streets, in its churches with a Romanesque origin, and in the typical Castilian porticoed squares.
