Borrocal de la Majada Stone River. Orihuela del Tremedal

The ‘stone rivers’ are a very unusual natural spectacle shared by the towns of Orea and Orihuela in the centre of the Montes Universales. They are formations of boulders that are broken up by ice action that shatters the quartzite on the top of the Tremedal Mountains and which then move downhill by the force of gravity. In this way, they look like rivers of stone.
Although most of these scree slopes, which can be over 2 kilometres long, are in the area of the Shrine of the Virgin of Tremedal, the one called the ‘Borrocal de la Majada’ is quite characteristic.
